Humble Beginnings
Foxborough Furniture was founded in 2004 by husband and wife, Steven and Dawn Marfurt. At the time, Steven had been restoring furniture for 12 years, advertising his services the old-fashioned way—posting ads in shop windows and relying on word of mouth. While this method brought in work, it had limitations, as all projects had to be done from home.
One day, Dawn, who had recently completed a business course, spotted a vacant shop for rent. Taking a leap of faith, she decided to secure the premises—and just like that, Foxborough Furniture was born.
With tight finances, the shop opened with just four carefully curated furniture pieces arranged in a circular layout for customers to browse. It’s safe to say it didn’t take long for visitors to see the entire collection! The other half of the space was sectioned off by a curtain, where Steven continued his restoration work.
Growth & Recognition
Over the last 20+ years, Foxborough Furniture has grown tremendously. Today, the shop holds over 100 pieces of furniture, has sold more than 4,000 items, and has built a loyal customer base. Many return time and time again, recognizing the rarity of true antique restoration in today’s market.
The business has also had the privilege of working on commissioned projects for renowned artist Pablo Bronstein. Steven’s craftsmanship has brought Pablo’s designs to life, transforming them from sketches into beautifully handcrafted furniture. These pieces have been featured in The New York Times and displayed at Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery.
Foxborough Furniture’s reputation has also attracted notable clients, including actress Beverley Callard (Liz McDonald from Coronation Street) and a director from Dead Man’s Shoes.
A New Chapter & A Modern Approach
In 2020, as the world slowed down during the pandemic, Dawn and Steven’s son, Michael, saw an opportunity to join the family business. Now a key part of Foxborough Furniture, he works as a buyer, restorer, and seller. With a degree in marketing and experience at a multi-million-pound fire protection company, he has also taken the lead in expanding the company’s marketing efforts.
Inspired by the elegance of the Art Deco era, Foxborough Furniture has embraced this style in many of its restoration projects. A large portion of the pieces we restore now reflect the beauty and craftsmanship of this timeless design movement.
